AFS English books is stealing teacher's work.

As a teacher I must stand for this cause and tell you all what's going on.
I've written about the site www.Eslprintables.com quite many times here. It's a wonderful, site where teacher's from all over the world share their work with no other compensation then that "sharing".
What happens is that many of the worksheets published on the site were stolen and published on some books from AFS.
I'm sure no teacher in ESLprintables worries when he sees his/her work being used at schools by another teacher. That’s what sharing is all about, but it's not fair that someone is making money out of someone else's sweat.
I’d like to warn all English teachers not to buy these books.
You can read more information about this on:

Dear readers,

Today I want to tell you about a wonderful website called: “Explore”
It has got many resources which can be used in class to show our students the real world we are living in.
Explore is not only good for language lessons but also for Science, History, Geography, but most of all, this site is about Philanthropy …

“explore is a multimedia organization that documents leaders around the
world who have devoted their lives to extraordinary causes. Both educational and
inspirational, explore creates a portal into the soul of humanity by championing
the selfless acts of others”.

A day before I found “Explore”, I was talking to someone about how rare it is to find people who actually care about helping others, and the environment just for the sake of helping.
The society we’re living in is becoming more and more selfish, more and more “me centered”. Explore has shown me a new bean of hope, there are still people who care, there are still people who want to give regardless what they’ll get. For all this, I want to share it with you:
There are many videos, photos and articles. Check it out by clicking the image bellow.

Ps. Don't forget to tell me what you think!

Wishing a great December... and careful evaluations!

Hi everybody,

Today is the first of December. This is usually a month of great emotions and even greater frenzy.
Here in Portugal it's also the last month of the first term of lessons. Which means... evaluations are at the corner.
I already feel a bit uneasy about this.
It's so hard to turn a person into a number.
I believe this is the most difficult part of being a teacher. We all know that it's not only the tests that count. But how do you evaluate the rest. Students are human, some days they are full of energy and optimistic, and other days they wake up like if they want to eat the entire world.
There's no measure to evaluate personalities or reactions, interest or dedication.
No matter how many grids we create we'll always be unfair. It's helpless. We cannot know a student enough to be able to evaluate what he/she knows or what he/she doesn't know.
I'll do my best and hope that I don't miss judge any of my kids... It's all I can do.

Tongue twisters

I’ve recently found this wonderful site about Tongue Twisters. It’s worth taking a look at!
Tongue Twisters are a great way to teach new sounds and to practice reading with the students. It is usually great fun for the students and once you give them some Tongue twister to practice, they’ll ask you for more!

Thanksgiving Info- 26th Nov 2009

Thanksgiving or Thanksgiving Day, presently celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November, has been an annual tradition in the United States since 1863. It did not become a federal holiday until 1941. Thanksgiving was historically a religious observation to give thanks to God, and is still celebrated as such by many families, but it is now also considered a secular holiday as well.

Most Americans celebrate by gathering at home with family or friends for a holiday feast. Though the holiday's origins can be traced to harvest festivals which have been celebrated in many cultures since ancient times, the American holiday is tied to the deliverance of the English settlers by Native Americans after the harsh winter at Plymouth, Massachusetts and that event has become the pre-eminent foundation story for English North America.

The First Thanksgiving was celebrated to give thanks to God and the Native Americans for helping the pilgrims survive the brutal winter. Although half of the pilgrims who arrived on the Mayflower had already died, many more would have had it not been for the Native Americans teaching the pilgrims to harvest foods. The first Thanksgiving feast lasted three whole days providing enough food for 53 pilgrims and 90 Indians. The traditional Thanksgiving menu often features turkey, stuffing, sweet potatoes and pumpkin pie. Americans may eat these foods on modern day Thanksgiving, but the first feast did not consist of these items. On the first feast turkey was any type of fowl that the pilgrims hunted. Pumpkin pie wasn't on the menu because there were no ovens for baking, but they did have boiled pumpkin. Cranberries weren't introduced at this time. Due to the diminishing supply of flour there was no bread of any kind. The foods included in the first feast included duck, geese, venison, fish, lobster, clams, swan, berries, dried fruit, pumpkin, squash, and many more vegetables.

Halloween - Exhibition

This is a bit of what we did at our school! The group of English teachers set up a special Halloween corner with spooky creatures, scary music and lots of spider webs.

The students made beautiful arts and crafts which were exhibited on the walls.

Images and cards for Halloween (list of sites)

A very kind teacher from ESLprintables listed these sites so we can easily find materials for our Halloween activities.

I decided to post it here as well.

I hope it's useful!

New school year 2009-2010

It's time to put our summer holidays on a very sweet drawer of our memories and get back to the TEACHING-FRENZY!!

It's time to put all our troubles away and concentrate on what really matters for us teachers.
This year I'll be teaching 7 classes at primary school. I'm very curious to see all those faces and hear all that they have to say.
I'm happy with my schedule and also because I´ll be teaching at the same school. It's great when it's possible to continue the work we've done the previous year.
Right now I'm on the planning stage. Any good ideas for projects?
In England I've learnt many great techniques, I wonder when I'll be able to use them.
Well, I wish you all a great new year and... we'll keep in touch

Pilgrims course - Canterbury

As I've written before, I spent the last two weeks of July in England taking a course called : "Methodologies and Language for primary teachers" well, it couldn't be more appropriated to my needs!

The course was very intense and my trainer was very demanding. She's made those two weeks look like a month of work.. if not more..

In the following days I'll be writing some reports on the things I felt were more interesting such as the approaches to multiple intelligences in language learning, the CLIL Process when teaching; Brain Gym, VAKOG...

It may all sound like Chinese right now but I'll try to make a nice and easy summary of some of these very interesting aspects of Language learning/teaching.

I'm glad to be back to "teaching frenzy"!!

"English Tea Break"

Last June 1st was a very special day at school! Besides being the world's children day, I took the chance to develop a special activity with my students. It was called "The english tea break" . With the help of 2 other teachers, I took the students to the canteen and they baked some scones. While the scones were cooking in the oven and the water was warming up for the tea, I talked about the 5 o'clock tea tradition. The students learned some curiosities such as that it was a Portuguese Princess (Catarina de Bragança) who started this tradition in England.
At 5 o'clock, the tea was served! A bit later came the scones right from the oven. We put some jam on them and then it was the most delicious part of the activity!!! EATING!!!

Ps. It was a hell of a job.. but very worth doing!! Specially when I got back to the classroom and read a message the students' had left for me on the board : "Thank you for today's lesson!" I guess that my stress went all way when I read that!

It's been a while...

Hello dear readers,

It's been a while since I've posted new messages or goodies for your lessons. I must apologize for that and meantime explain my reasons.

The year is almost over so we're all in the evaluation frenzy around here. It's been taking some of my time and it's preventing me from developing new materials.
I hope this phase will quickly go away because this is not what teaching is all about...

Responsible student award!

As my pen-paling project develops, I felt the need to create a special award to those students who had been very responsible and were able to meet all the deadlines established during the project.

I think that it is very important to motivate good behavior and responsibility! The students who didn't receive the award felt jealous and I liked that reaction! It means that next time they'll probably do better in order to get an award themselves!

Playground activities - Worksheet 2

This is the second worksheet on the theme "playground activities". It is very similar to the first one but this time I ask students to draw their favourite playground activity. The drawing is the starting point for another activity which I will explain later.

Playground activities - Worksheet

The last month of lessons has arrived and I must confess that I'm quite happy about it!

For this last month I've planed talking about playground activities and holidays.

Here you may see an example of what I've done with my 1st graders. It was not only a worksheet but also a pair work activity. After exploring the words and sentences, the kids had to ask their partners the questions and write "yes" or "no".

I hope it's useful!

Hoola Hoop - New book for primary english! (in Portugal)

Yesterday I was as the presentation of this new book in Albufeira. It is a new project for primary english. The books were developed according to the "Estudo do Meio" (social studies) program. I thought that was really positive because this way students can consolidate their knowledge and learn new things in English rather than the traditional topics we've been teaching!
The project includes cds, cd-roms, posters, flashcards.. etc.
I thought I should write about it so that more teachers can be aware of what's new...
Now, one question. Do you use books in your classes?

Lyrics - worksheet

On this worksheet, you have the lyrics of the song of the previous video. It is a gap filling exercise. It's not difficult although the song is long. My 3rd grade students succeeded on doing this!

Wind is blowing clothes away... - Video

I hope you'll enjoy this song! I've found it on YouTube and used it already in class! It is very repetitive and although it's a bit long, it doesn't get the kids bored!

Clothes game.

Hi there!

During my last unit - Clothes - I've used a very nice game in class which I've forgotten to post here. It's an easy game.
You make a circle with the entire class to explain the game, and then keep them that way to play.

You ask a small group of students to get out of the classroom (but stay by the door), until you call them back. While they hide, some of the student's in the circle change clothes (jackets or jumpers basically)

When the hidden group of students comes in, they have to say in english, who has swapped clothes with whom and which clothes have been swapped. The studdent who guesses right and says it better wins the game.

New patches for old - Story

Hello everyone!

I'm here to tell you about a story.
I've used this story with my 3rd graders! They loved it!They were curious all the time, wanting to know what was hidden in the next pages.
It is a great story to tell when we are teaching clothes. The main character is Hasan he bought new trousers for a special celebration but the trousers are too long. He asks his wife, daughter and mum for help. What happened??
You must read the story ;)
It is funny!!

Mrs. Pickaboo needs new shoes - Story

Here is another PowerPoint with a great story to tell while teaching clothes.
It's a 4 page story about a ladybug who wants to go to a party but has got no shoes. She goes to the shoemaker and tries many different shoes...
The rest you have to read for yourselves :D
This story is also from the magazine: "The teacher's magazine"
It worked well with my first graders.
There are plenty of follow up activities we can develop after this story...
Please tell me what you think!

Poster about clothes.

Hi there everybody!
My students have built this poster about clothes. They coloured and cut the clothes. Now this poster is hanging on the wall and the students can change the doll's clothes every time they want, the way they wish. There's only one rule. All clothes must be placed above their "word" labels  This way the kids can play and still associate the words with the pictures even without knowing they are "studying".
I prefer this kind of "pro-active" posters to the "static" ones.

Clothes' patterns - 4th grade

Here you have one more WS about clothes. This time, the purpose is to make students practice clothes' descriptions.
The image was taken from "The teacher's magazine" (-as most of the times:) )
I hope it is useful. I'll be waiting for your comments.
I see there's a lot of people downloading my materials, I'm happy about that but I'd be even more happy if I got some more feedback. Did you use them with your students? Did it work? Did you find any incorrections?... Please let me know.
You can use the "bla, bla, bla" chat box or simple comment under this post :)
Have a nice FRIDAY

Clothes worksheet for 1st grade

With this Worksheet it is possible to make a revision about "colours" and "family" vocabulary.
It requires reading. I used it with my first graders but we did it step by step. I'd read the instructions and they'd answer what colour they had to use and where.
I hope It's a good resource...

Clothes worksheet for 4th grade

Hey there!
Although it is Sunday  and I should be resting, or having fun, I've decided to come here and make one more worksheet for my pupils!
This one is about clothes. That's the topic I've been teaching since last week.
I'm going to give this one to my 4th graders after I teach them more vocabulary about clothes. Such as "dotted", "checked", "striped"...
With this worksheet I'm making also a revision about body characteristics...
Well, I guess it's all for now!

Ps. I just want to wish a happy mother's day to all my brazilian readers ;)

It's still Spring time!! - Ainda é Primavera

Hello everybody!
Here is a nice Idea to decorate a classroom wall for spring time!
This is the wall of one of my first grade classes. They did this wonderful work with their "main" teacher - Teacher Teresa. I liked the final result so much that I asked her to take pictures and publish it.
I hope it brings up ideas ;)

Clothes - activity

Here is a new activity which I used with my students today:
First, there were a boy and a girl on the board.
Then, I told the kids that we should dress them according to the weather...
I put the clothes on the board and as I did so, I asked the kids: "What's this?.."
After we've been through all the clothes, I asked some kids - one by one - to come to the board and follow my instructions. For example:
"Put the red skirt on the girl".. they had to look for the red skirt and stick it on the girl...
With this activity I explored vocabulary about the clothes, about colours and about the weather.
It was very nice to see all the kids wanting to participate and to help the ones who were having some doubts.
Notes: The pictures (boys and clothes) were taken from "THE TEACHER'S MAGAZINE"
The frames I've used here were taken from the great blog: http://rocha2goretty.blogspot.com

Farm-Jungle Animals. Animals to colour

Here you may see my blackboard again!
Today, as a final activity about the unit " Animals" my students had to fill these boards with animals from the farm and from the jungle.
Each student had a different animal. They were asked to colour and cut out the animal. After that, they would present themselves as if they were the animal they were holding. For example: "I'm a snake. I live in the Jungle."
I'll leave you here some of those animals as well. I got them by searching on Google.

See more:

Birdies video.

I've made this video so that I can make a revision about the names of some birds with my students.

During the video you'll see: Pigeons, Eagles, Peacoks, Roosters, Robins, Turkeys and Owls. These may not be the kind of animals we usually teach to 1st graders but as I've seen they liked them so much at the cartoon, why not?

Birds Worksheet

This is a matching about birds. I'll use it with my little students (1st grade). Last lesson they've seen a bit of the Cartoon "Elmo's World". In that Cartoon, they've seen all these birds and -I hope- they'll still remember some of them!!
I'll write how it went!

Respostas a testes de alunos do 1ºciclo - FANTÁSTICO Just for Fun (in Portuguese)

O Papa vive no Vácuo (!?)

- O hemisfério Norte gira no sentido contrário do hemisfério Sul.

- A Primavera é a primeira estação do ano.

Activity - Animals

This is how the blackboard of my 4th grade class looked like yesterday.
I've made a kind of a guessing game with my students. I just wrote these sentences and asked them to copy. They had to complete the sentences as they wished, without knowing the meaning of what was written there.
After they've finished  we had a blast with some of the sentences. "The rabbit flies", "The snake is sweet" etc.
Students knew that this was the purpose of the activity. Having some fun.
At the end I explained the meaning of the sentences ad they wrote the words in the correct places.

Activity - My favourite pet

I've used this activity with all my classes and it worked really well!
First you must have flashcards (A4 if possible) and quite a lot of adhesive gum.
Then you ask the students to take a pencil or a pen cap (the lighter the better).
You ask them individually, "What's your favourite animal?" They will answer your question and then mark the animal with their pencil.
When all class has finished marking the animals, you can explore the results.

  • Which one is the champion?
  • How many students voted for the snake?
  • How many votes did the dog get?
  • Which is the animal with zero votes?
  • ... and a whole lot more of questions....

Pets - Worksheet

Here you have one more worksheet.
This one was used with my 1st grade students.
If you want to use it with elder students, you can erase the name of the animals and ask them to write them down.
I used this worksheet as the last task of a lesson dedicated to pets. During all the lesson we explored the vocabulary, played some games and talked about the class' favourite pets.

Inspirational Story

This is the second time I've received an e-mail with this story. It's so beautiful that I couldn't help posting it here. I'm sorry that It's in Portuguese, I'll try to make an english version later..
Talvez quisesse apenas dar-lhe coragem...

Back to work!

Here I am!! Back to work and back to Teaching Frenzy! I really needed that time off, I was getting too tired. Right now I feel powerful again!!

Today I'll leave you here a worksheet which I've made about weather! I hope you'll enjoy it!

Happy Easter!!

Time to Relax..

Dear Readers,

Teaching-Frenzy has been a bit "asleep" lately. I haven't been posting any new things but I feel the need to explain you why.

I'm enjoying some free days from work, from school, from the place where I live.

I'm at my home town right now and it feels so good.

I'm sorry that I stopped updating Teaching-frenzy for a while but everyone knows that sometimes a little distance from everything is good for our spirit.

I'll be back soon with new materials and a whole lot of new things to share with you. I'm taking some courses on "how to teach english to primary levels" it's being great. Later I'll leave you here some of the input I'm getting from it.

Enjoy life!

Another Spring Worksheet

This one I've used this morning with my 1st grade!
First I used flashcards to teach these words. After some oral games the students had to draw these new words in the right place.
I used the "portuguese manuscript font" (the one we teach in primary schools). If you want you can change it. My Idea is to make the english lessons a part of the curricular lessons of the class. I want them to feel that all teachers work for the same purpose, teaching and educating them.

Demi Lovato Reading Comprehension WS

Demi Lovato is one of the "teen stars" who catches the attention of my students. They suggested that I should make a worksheet about her. Here it is. Just like the one I've made on Hannah Montana, this one is a Reading Comprehension Worksheet that requires only to write the words true or false according to the text. My students are at primary level so I do not focus on what they can produce, I rather focus on what they should understand and assimilate before they produce their own sentences.

A lot of good reading and good listening will most probably lead to good speaking and writing!

Spring Worksheet

Next week, as it's the last week of lessons before Easter holidays, I'll be doing some activities about Spring and Easter. For a start, after the warm up and after teaching some vocabulary, I'll use this worksheet with my younger students. It is full of spring pictures and the activities differ from colouring to joining dots or drawing.
I hope you like it!
